“In & Out,That’s What a Cat (and bunny) is All About!”

“In & Out, In & Out, that’s what a cat is all about!”

Inside, outside, inside, outside, never making up her mind!

Why is this? Why do cats do this?

Do any other cat owners out there know what I’m talking about right now?

This is a commentary and a vent!! My cat Grizzabella is my absolute love but she drives me nuts with her constant desire to go outside on the porch.  I support her outside time. Our porch is a safe enclosed area where she can be outside and I can feel rest assured she is safe. But when she wants to come back in less than a minute later…it gets a little annoying.  Sound familiar?

It gets cold here on The Oregon Coast. Even though we live three blocks from the beach, the wind whips through the house if I leave the sliding door to the deck open for too long. Plus, we have several days in a row of rain. It’s cold, damp, chill to the bone weather.

I prefer to keep doors closed, and the heat on.

Here is a typical day

The minute I sit down to work, Grizzabella wants to go outside. How do I know?  She meows, then scratches the door with her paw. I get up to let her outside to roam the deck.  If it ‘s cold and windy I close the sliding doors. I then sit down and resume my work.  Less than two minutes pass, and I hear scratching on the sliding door.  I look and see Grizzabella standing on hind legs staring at me with wide panicked eyes. She wants in.  I get up to let her in and close the slider.  Two minutes go by.  Meow, scratch, meow, scratch,  cat language for “let me out”. I let her out, and close the slider. Two minutes later…scratch, meow…I let her in.

You get the drift…

Maybe there is some kind of cat psychology going on. If I leave the door open, she stays outside content. The minute it’s closed, she wants back in.

And now my bunny Dasher is getting in on the game…

Grizzabella has always been a bit anxious. I think she doesn’t want to be left outside, forgotten, or stuck. She likes to be included and know what is going on. When that door is closed it plays on her fears of being abandoned and I think she panics…don’t worry Grizzy, I won’t leave you, sweetie!

One theory I have is that she’s just a narcissistic cat and she wants to control the situation. If I close the door, she loses that control and freedom to come in and out as she chooses. Since she is an independent cat who likes to have her way, this makes sense.

I’ve come up with a solution.

Completely give in to her whims and leave the door open as much as possible. When it is freezing cold, I close the door and play the In & Out game all day. I’ve given in, given up. I am a slave to my cat. I have lost the battle. I wish I could offer wise scientific proven advice to conquer this highly aggravating in and out dilemma. But my theories and practices have been put to test, and I have my conclusion:

There is no way to stop or change your cat.

Just give in, give in now! Stop fighting.  They’ve won……In & Out will continue forever

Cats rule dogs drool….and humans are slaves to their kitties……(and bunnies)

That’s all I have to say about that!
