How to Help Mom Study: Tips from a Glamour Cat

This past month I started an online course for proofreading. It’s an intensive grammar course designed to polish the eagle eye of self-proclaimed word nerds such as myself. Since moving to the coast I have been taking some time off of work, which has been great! It’s given me time to get established in the local music community (I am a jazz singer), start my blog, write children’s stories, and explore the world of publishing since my ultimate dream is to publish those stories! I’ve been writing blog posts; rehearsing; getting gigs; and submitting my stories to magazines, publishers and agents! It feels great...most days.

However, some days it has its challenges.  Starting over in a new location, spending many days alone (my husband is a firefighter, so I am alone often), and putting myself outside my comfort zone isn’t always easy. When the rejection letters started coming in from publishers I started to feel discouraged. And when I heard crickets while waiting for people to discover and read my blog, I felt more discouragement. But it’s okay! I know this is part of it. Rejection, trial and error, and mistakes go hand in hand with pursuing any dream. I just have to hang in there! Most days I know this, but some days it sucks!  Thank goodness for these guys! They get me through the tough days!

After much research, I decided to start a proofreading course. My goal is to make money from home as a freelance proofreader so I can have the flexibility to travel for music gigs and travel with my husband.  And since the book publishing and blogging are long-term financial goals, I need to start focusing on some short-term financial goals as well. I love to read, and I’ve always enjoyed proofing and editing papers for friends and family. I’m really enjoying the course, but it is very challenging. My grammar muscles have been dormant for years, and getting them back in shape has been hard work!  Again, I have a great helper!  The one and only Grizzabella the Glamour Cat!  She’s been a great buddy and sidekick through this whole journey of mine.

I asked Grizzabella to share some more glamour cat tips for my readers. Specifically, how she helps me–her mom– study!

Take it away Grizzy!

Stalk your mom’s every move and watch for the moment she sits down at the table to write. Then you can make your move!

Find a comfortable position by her computer, and make sure you cover at least one-fourth of the keyboard.

Stare intently at her every move.

When exhaustion hits after all those hours watching Mom type, go find a quiet corner and take a glamour nap.

My mom likes to move to the couch and work because the chair hurts her back after a while. If your mom does the same, this is an excellent time for you to transition to the couch as well.

Sit on as many course worksheets as you can.

Sit on Mom’s lap and offer support.  A little love goes a long way for Mom!

When my mom needs a break from work, she likes to read a book.  I like to sit on her book and cover most of the page. I suggest you do the same.

When your mom gets sleepy and starts to doze off, assume a comfy position with your paw or foot on her left arm.

When exhaustion takes over, and she succumbs to an afternoon nap, snuggle up with her and take a nap too!

Moms really like that!
