You’re a Good Brother Dasher!

I’m so proud of my little pet rabbit Dasher. I love having a pet rabbit. He’s super cute, and he’s a great companion. I love watching him run and hop around the house or sit by the refrigerator every morning waiting for his veggies. And the cutest thing to watch is when he and my cat Grizzabella chase one another and then sit and just hang out on the deck.

Today, I saw another trait in my little Dash Man that melted my heart!

My dear kitty Grizzabella has been having a small flea problem. She never had any flea issues in Southern Oregon but since living on the coast, the fleas have discovered her. I’m not sure why, but my guess is there are sand fleas and as much as we try not to track sand into the house, it still finds its way into our premises and on everything!

I called my mom and she suggested Frontline, so I went to the local pet store and bought an equivalent brand called Sentry Fiproguard Plus. Poor little thing has really been itching and licking herself this week–more than usual. She’s also been really anxious. I’m pretty sure it’s the flea issue causing all the discomfort. My poor little baby! I feel so bad!

When I got home I opened the package and followed the instructions. I had to squeeze the medication out of the tube onto her skin between her shoulder blades. Of course, she hated it! Grizzy was wiggling and struggling to escape my grasp. She also started meowing loudly… a loud, but low strange meow that only surfaces when she is in distress! I  kept my voice calm as I softly told her she was a good girl and it was going to be okay. She was one unhappy distressed little kitty.

I wasn’t surprised by her reaction. Of course, I knew she was going to hate sitting there while I put this sticky awful stuff on her back. But what surprised me was Dasher. When Grizzy started to howl, Dasher came running towards me. He stopped by my side and sniffed my leg, hand, and then sniffed Grizzabella. After he sniffed, he protectively head-butted my leg several times. Even though he can’t understand my words, I used a soft tone in my voice to let him know I wasn’t trying to hurt her. I was worried he was gonna charge me and bite me any minute. But as I reached out and pet him he put his little front two paws on my leg and stood up on his hind legs. It looked as if he was trying to get the best view of his sister to make sure she was alright.

blurry but cute!

He was trying to protect her! It was so darling and it absolutely touched my heart. Dear little Dash Man. What a good brother!

After I finished applying the medicine on Grizzabella, I let her out of my grasp. Dasher then chased after her and sat next to her by the window. I think he was checking on her to make sure she was okay. It was sooo cute!  What a good little brother! I think Dash Man was concerned for his big sissy. When he was sniffing and head butting me I’m pretty sure that was Dash Man looking after Grizz.

Good boy Dasher!!  Mommy’s proud of you!

It never ceases to amaze me how those two have bonded!  Cat and rabbits can definitely live as siblings. Actually, not just siblings, but friends!
